iPad 5 Release Date and Price: What to Expect From iPad 5 Launch Based on Previous Apple Releases

Apple will hold a press event on Oct. 22 to discuss many different new devices and programs the company plans to launch, but the highlight for most will be news about Apple's new iPad. While the new hardware may be under wraps for now, some rumors about the newest member of the iPad family have leaked, providing some idea for what to expect from the company.

According to Expertreviews the new iPad is expected to simply be called the iPad 5, and will most likely be launched very soon after the Oct. 22 press event, hitting Apple Store shelves, online, and at other retailers in early November. If the report is accurate, it makes sense: Apple usually brings in a new generation of hardware in yearly cycles, and the iPad 4 was announced in October of 2012 and released on Nov. 2—six months after the company had released the iPad 3. Judging from the price of the iPad 4, and assuming Apple wouldn't want to overrun that range with its newest iteration, the iPad 5 should start at about the mid-$400 range and up.

Many are also concluding that Apple will announce a new iPad Mini to go along with the iPad 5. However, it is unclear if Apple will announce the iPad Mini 2 at the event, and considering the company will also reveal a Macbook Pro with a retina display and OS X Mavericks, the iPad Mini 2 may have to wait for the time being. 

As for the iPad 5's specs, the device allegedly packs an A7 with quad-core graphics and Lightning connector. The size and resolution of the display for the new iPad is expected to stay the same as previous models (9.7 inches with a 2,048x1,536 resolution), but the screen thickness is expected to shrink. A GF2 touchscreen is rumored to be in the new iPad, bringing the thickness of the whole device down considerably. It should be noted, however, that a larger iPad is rumored to be in the works with a screen of 12-13 inches, but it is unlikely that this would be used on the iPad 5.

Other expected specs include models with internal memory ranging from 16-128GB, based on the iPad 4.

It is hard to pin down a price for the new iPad 5, there are too many purported models of the device (for both memory size and 4G capabilities). Apple usually maintains the same price models from one generation to the next, so if this holds true, the iPad 5 should be expected to have a similar price point to the iPad 4 at launch.
