The mysteries of the underwater world have long been exciting people's minds. As if trying to show that oceans and creatures living in their depths are their penchant, marine enthusiasts pick jewelry featuring oceanic motifs. Some of the most original jewelry pieces are those flashing octopus or cuttlefish images. These symbols, although rarely seen in body ornaments, command the utmost attention due to mystery and a wealth of meanings inherent in them. If you, too, considering buying an octopus pendant or ring, you should first learn what it means to make sure it fits you well in a semantic way.

The Significance of Octopus and Cuttlefish Imagery

An octopus on a par with its congener cuttlefish is an ambiguous animal. Its meaning is neither exclusively positive nor negative. The truth is that it has a little bit of both worlds - it is on the light and dark side at the same time.

Let's start with positive meanings put in octopus images.

The Symbol of Intelligence

The mysterious animal is credited with wisdom and resourcefulness. Its head is much larger than its body, and therefore, it must have a remarkable mind. In fact, its brain is no larger than that of a domestic cat, but a developed nervous system distributed across its eight arms makes its intellectual abilities truly marvelous. It's fair to say that an octopus has nine brains - one is in its head and eight are in its tentacles.

Does it mean that octopuses are smart? Well, they are not the smartest brutes even among the deep-sea dwellers but they surely deserve praise for their brainpower. They are capable of finding a way out of mazes, solving challenging tasks, and even utilizing available materials for refuge or protection. They also boast a commendable short memory. Do not hurt octopuses, they will remember the offense for a long time.

Although the intellectual potential of octopuses has not yet been fully explored, their ingenuity has been known since ancient times. Saying that someone is as smart as an octopus means to give that person a nice compliment. Therefore, the images of the eight-armed creature in jewelry, accessories, and tattoos carry the meaning of wisdom and intelligence.

Eternal Life and Immortality

It is not every day that you meet someone who can regenerate severed extremities. Well, the hero of our story possesses this superpower. But that's not all, it also has not one, and not two, but three hearts. The heart by itself is a symbol of living, and if you triple their quantity, you get something more than life - immortality.

It is not that humanity lacks symbols with the same meaning, but if you're looking for something original (and, as you already know, full of other positive connotations), a silver octopus pendant necklace or a similar accessory will come very in handy.

Flexibility

At first glance, octopuses look awkward - a large head, virtually no torso, but more than enough arms. With such a body, sea invertebrates would seem to be clumsy and bumbling. However, the reality is that octopuses cruise through the depths of the sea, if not gracefully, then certainly effectively. They have excellent coordination of their limbs, and in the case of an attack or vice versa, defense, the animal acts with lightning speed and decisiveness.

On top of that, their spineless bodies are able to penetrate the narrowest crevices or openings. If a hole is five times smaller than the octopus's head, rest assured that it will seep into it like mercury.

People have always admired the octopus's ability to adapt to its environment, its body control, and agility. A piece of jewelry depicting this eight-armed talent is going to be an excellent gift for a person who is sporty, athletic, and proud of their body.

Death and Darkness

Now it's time to delve into the negative interpretations of the octopus symbol. As a contradictory creature, it simultaneously carries the meaning of life and death. We have already said why it is associated with life and immortality but what does it have to do with death? Let's figure it out.

There are about two hundred species of octopuses. Some of them are poisonous and pose a deadly threat to people. Every creature that can harm and even kill a person always becomes a messenger of death. And if we consider the aura of mysticism surrounding our cephalopod hero, its menacing nature becomes clear as day.

Master of Disguise

Speaking about clearness, nothing is really clear about octopuses. If you get too close to one of them, it will release a cloud of ink to camouflage its retreat. Also, it is able to change its body color to blend in with the surroundings, just like the chameleons. The fickle nature of the aquatic animal has made it a symbol of hypocrisy and ever-changing.

Many cultures considered octopuses to be henchmen of evil forces. No wonder why - they live in the darkness and have supernatural abilities. At the same, people saw the concept of the creation of the world in the way octopuses are built. The eight spiral tentacles have the symbolic meaning of the universe unwinding from the cosmic center.

Despite so many colliding meanings, one thing is for sure - octopuses mesmerize and leave us in awe. You can't have a cephalopod as a pet, but it's easy to show your respect and admiration for these unique creatures with high-quality octopus jewelry and accessories.
