Angry Birds has become a video game juggernaut on mobile devices, and the latest spinoff title for the franchise seeks to take the infamous birds and bring them to the race track.

Angry Birds Go! will be a racing game in the vein of such classics such as Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing. The game will be free-to-play according to developer Rovio and will feature many of the iconic Angry Birds characters along with customizable karts and special powers that will populate a fully 3-D world according to Gamespot.

The game will become available on many different mobile platforms beginning on Dec. 11. The confirmed platforms for Angry Birds Go! include iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10. The game will be connected to the Hasbro Telepods toy line. This feature involves users buying toy in the real world that can be imported into various video games.

Rovio stated that the launch of Angry Birds Go! is "just the beginning" for the new game. The company may be adding additional content such as tracks, karts, and characters to the game after launch, though Rovio could end up charging for this new content (if that is indeed the company's plan) after offering the main game for free. There has been no word on what sort of microtransactions will be available in the game.

The gameplay seen in the trailer looks fairly interesting. The game mixes traditional racing mechanics with coin collecting found in "endless runner" games such as Temple Run. Players race down the track in karts and race in the air with special flying vehicles. The vibe of the game fits with the cartoon aesthetic of the series, with characters flying downhill as they contend with hazards such as jumps and explosive traps.

The special powers for the characters provide players with significant advantages. Players will be able to launch themselves forward (mimicking the original Angry Birds gameplay), while other characters in the game will shoot lightning at foes or gain the ability to fly over the competition to avoid hazards.

The game looks interesting and fun to play, and could convert some gamers who previous dismissed the franchise into true believers. If players are already addicted to Angry Birds or their Star Wars spinoff titles then Angry Birds Go! should be a must have day one download on Dec. 11.
