FIFA 14 is one of the games that developer EA Sports hopes will define the next generation of sports games, but it appears the company is not putting the same amount of care into the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions as they are for the Nintendo 3DS iteration of the game. Nintendo sent a press release to Eurogamer about the handheld version of the soccer simulator, and revealed that the new game will have very little to distinguish itself from last year's version.

"FIFA 14 Legacy Edition delivers unmatched authenticity that reflects the current football season with updated kits and rosters but no updates to gameplay or game modes," said Nintendo.

It looks as Nintendo fans will have very little to look forward to when it comes to FIFA 14. While the 3DS version of the game appears to be the same for the most part as FIFA 13, at least the handheld will have the game. The Wii U will not be receiving the game at all. EA has decided to focus on the other next-gen consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as opposed to the low-selling Nintendo console.

While some fans may be interested in buying the latest version of the FIFA 14 for the latest rosters and other such details, it is hard to justify purchasing the game based on this alone. After all, EA has gone to great lengths to show how they have revamped FIFA 14 for a new generation of consoles, so the fact that the latest entry is so similar to older games in the franchise is particularly glaring.

This type of bare minimum update has been seen previously for the FIFA series on the Wii before EA ultimately decided to skip bringing the series to the Wii U. The Wii version of FIFA 13 was ultimately shown to be virtually the same as FIFA 12, indicating once again that EA was giving up on Nintendo hardware. EA may regret this decision this time around, though, as the Nintendo 3DS has proven to be quite popular with fans and has frequently outsold other consoles on the market this past year.

In any case, the console versions of FIFA 14, especially the next-gen versions of the game, should be on the radar of many gamers and could very well be the top sports game of the year.
