Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most popular games of all time, partially due to the success of Grand Theft Auto Online. Recently, Take-Two, the game's publisher discussed the future of the online mode during an earnings call.

According to IGN, when asked about microtransactions and DLC, CEO Strauss Zelnick said that the company's experiences with Grand Theft Auto 4's DLC have influenced the release strategy for Grand Theft Auto Online, and Take-Two is investigating how to keep the tens of millions of fans playing the game after the next-gen consoles launch:

"What we find is, when you have a hit product, there is an opportunity to continue to delight consumers with ongoing content, and that always remains our focus. Our focus around here does not start with 'how do we look at our consumers? They showed up in droves. Now how do we extract more money from their pockets?' We genuinely don't. What we think about is, 'the reason our consumers showed up is because we delighted them in a way they didn't expect.' As high as our expectations were, we blew them out of the water and we did that because of the extraordinary creative work done at Rockstar."

In addition, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff shot down the possibility of the game coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

"We haven't discussed any plans for GTA, at all, in relating to next-generation. So nothing to say there," said Slatoff.

In a separate statement from Take-Two, the company revealed that they have shipped 29 million units of the game. This means that the company has sold that many units to retailers, not necessarily to consumers.

"We believe Grand Theft Auto V is the fastest-selling entertainment release in history, grossing over $800 million in retail sales during the first 24 hours after launch and over $1 billion in only three days...Grand Theft Auto V became available for digital download through the PlayStation Network on the day of release and became the biggest release ever on the platform. In addition, the Games on Demand release of the title on Xbox Live became the highest grossing day 1 and week 1 release in the platform's history," Take-Two said in its statement.

In six weeks Grand Theft Auto 5 has shipped as many units as Grand Theft Auto 4 has in its lifetime, figures that will only continue to snowball with time.
