While you can currently pre-order a Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, packaged with the Galaxy Note 3 for $600 from Verizon Wireless - and more carriers are gearing up for launch soon, should you wait for the Galaxy Gear 2?

Perhaps, if a recent report from the Korean news site Digital Times (via CNET) is correct. The report is saying that Samsung is already staring development of the Galaxy Gear 2 due to mixed responses to the first, and latest, Samsung smartwatch.

That supposedly lackluster smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Gear, is an accessory that was unveiled along with the new Galaxy Note 3; it's only been official for a couple of weeks, and the general public hasn't even gotten its hands on it yet.

So if you couldn't tell, this report is to be met with some skepticism, though at the rate that Samsung produces new mobile devices (and the fact that Samsung hasn't responded to the report) it's not completely out of the realm of possibility - but pretty close.

The report also states that the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 get a release date at CES or MWC 2014, which should also be taken with a pebble-sized grain of salt. Samsung reportedly is just a trial run, which Samsung is using to gauge the response of the wearable computing market.

The purported Galaxy Gear 2 will come packed with much richer features, longer battery life, and more independence from its tethered device, the Galaxy Note 3, including a GPS chip and the possibility of supporting more Android smartphones - according to the Digital Times report.

So if you're one of about half the wearable computing nerds that are jazzed up about the Galaxy Gear, should you just wait until a better Galaxy Gear 2 is released in January or February of next year?

At this point, I wouldn't bet on it.

You can pre-order a white Galaxy Note 3 and its Galaxy Gear companion (the one that definitely does exist) from Verizon Wireless now.  AT&T will begin accepting pre-orders Tuesday, Sept. 16, followed by T-Mobile on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
