Square Enix has launched its first true iOS "Final Fantasy" title. The game entitled "All the Bravest" is available today on iTunes and has received different reviews from pundits.
The Verge notes the title's visual style "is a great homage to the series' 16-bit days." The publication adds that the battle system is straight forward and that while it is "undeniably shallow, it's pretty fun trying to find new 'paths' of active members by sliding across the screen."
Players will be able to control up 30 different classical Final Fantasy characters as they battle against classic franchise villains. Villains can kill in one hit while characters will not be able to use any special attacks or target specific enemies.
According to Mac Rumors, the title focuses mainly on action and does away with "typical time consuming RPG activities like exploration, dungeon crawling, and dialogue." Geeko System notes that the title is short but there is sufficient downloadable content to further the experience.
Penny Arcade gravely disliked the title and claimed that "the game contains some of the most heinous monetization practices I've ever seen on any device." Reviewer Ben Kuchera notes that that players get three hourglasses to start over when they lose their players. However, when they use up all the hourglasses, they must to purchase more. Players can buy three hourglasses for $1, eight for $2, and 20 for $3. The game costs $3.99 on the App store and each of the 35 "premium" characters costs $0.99 a piece.
