The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is reporting that Tropical Storm Leslie has sidestepped the Bahamas and is now "racing" toward Newfoundland, according to its most recent public advisory.

Leslie is currently approximately 550 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland. The storm is moving NNE at 35 miles per hour and is packing maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour, with higher gusts seen.

As of the NHC's latest public advisory, there is now a hurricane watch in effect for Newfoundland from Stone's Cove to Charlottetown. A tropical storm warning is now in effect for Newfoundland from Indian Harbour to Triton. For those under the hurricane watch, this means hurricane conditions are possible in the area over the next 24 hours. The tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected in the area, in this case, within 24 hours.

Since the last NHC advisory, Leslie has increased and will continue to increase in forward speed. Minimal changes are expected in the storm's intensity before it makes landfall.

The weather in Newfoundland will begin to deteriorate this evening and the center of the storm is expected to move over Newfoundland by early Tuesday. The storm system is expected to transform into an extra-tropical or frontal cyclone within 24 hours.

In terms of Leslie's hazardous effects on land, swells generated by the storm will continue to affect Bermuda, portions of the United States east coast and the Canadian Atlantic Provinces for the next 1-2 days. These swells may cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Now, in terms of rainfall, Leslie is expected to produce total accumulations of 2-4 inches across Newfoundland and Eastern Nova Scotia. Isolated maximum amounts of 6 inches of rain are possible throughout that area.

The next NHC advisory is scheduled for 8:00 pm AST and Latinos Post will keep you updated as the weather information continues to flow in.
