Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag has many different ways players can improve both their ship, the Jackdaw, and their character, Edward Kenway. For anyone looking to get the most out Edward and improve his abilities, here's a guide for crafting upgrades to the main character.

Crafting requires players find different animal pelts and skins, as well as bones from some animals. While some creatures are easier to find than others, the best way to farm pelts and skins is to find where the rare animals are located, then fast travel away. Once players return to that place (again by fast travel) animals found in the area will have respawned.

One of the best upgrades to get is the four health upgrades, which increase Edward's overall health by 25 percent each. Each of the four upgrades requires a different pair of pelts. The first needs iguana leather; the second deer hides; the third jaguar pelts; and the last requires great white shark bones.

Another useful set of upgrades is for pistol holders. Each upgrade will give players an extra pistol to take out foes from long range. The first requires two ocelot pelts; the second needs two sets of humpback whale skin; and the last will cost players two sets of crocodile leather.

In a similar vein, players can craft pistol weapon pouches to add 10 pistol ammo capacities to Edward. The first upgrade will cost players two wild pig hides. The second needs two hammerhead shark bones to unlock. Dart pouch upgrades fulfill a similar function for blow gun ammo and sleep darts. The first dart pouch upgrade will require two howler monkey skins, and the second will require players to spend two killer whale skins.

Finally, players can craft several new outfits. A ocelot and jaguar pelt can be used to make the feline pelt outfit. The hunter outfit will require a red howler monkey pelt and a white jaguar pelt, and this will lower animal detection for hunting animals. The shark hunter outfit needs a bull shark skin and hammerhead shark bone to be completed. The last craftable outfit is the whaler outfit, which needs three white whale skins to be made.
