Singer Ricky Martin has partnered with SONY to launch a global music contest to find the next official song of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Huffington Post reported. The competition, named "SuperSong," was announced earlier this month; those who want to participate must sign in through the official website.
"It doesn't matter who you are or where you are, you have the chance to become a star and write the song of the next World Cup, and I will record it," says the "Come With Me" singer in a video introducing the competition (watch below).
Martin, who recorded the 1998 FIFA World Cup official song "La Copa de la Vida," will sing the "SuperSong" winner's song.
The Brazil World Cup has garnered large expectations among Latin Americans because the tournament has returned to the continent after several years.
"I am about to launch an album and then I will go on tour. Then we will be in Brazil for the World Cup," the singer added in his televised interview with "Primer Impacto."
Last week, Martin made it to headlines after he confessed, during an interview with GW Australia Magazine, that he bullied gay men while he was growing up.
The singer came out a as proud gay man back in 2010, but he opened up about being homophobic. "I look back now and realise I would bully people who I knew were gay," said Martin, according to the Daily Mail. "I had internalised homophobia. To realise that was confronting to me. I wanted to get away from that."
The "Livin' La Vida Loca" talked about struggling with his sexuality and how becoming a father to twin boys, Valentino and Mateo, changed his life.
"I didn't want them (his twin sons) growing up in a house of lies... or thinking that there was something wrong with being gay," Martin told GQ Australia.
The last World Cup song, "Waka Waka," was recorded by Colombian superstar Shakira for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Last month, it was chosen as Billboard's No. 1 World Cup Song.
The song is a collaboration with South African group Freshlyground and was released May 7, 2010 as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. "Waka Waka" was also included on Shakira's seventh studio album, "Sale el Sol."
