As Google fans in the U.K. gear up for the release date of the Google Nexus 2nd Generation, also known as the Google Nexus 7 2, users in the U.S. are starting to complain about screen issues and GPS problems with their new devices.
According to Google Product Forums, the most recent problem to arise with the Google Nexus 7 2 is related to the device's 7-inch touchscreen. The issues Nexus 7 2 users are facing involve the Google Nexus 7 2's multi-touch capability, or, rather, lack thereof.
According to KnowYourMobile, the forums are rife with complaints about the Google Nexus 7 2 constantly registering phantom double taps. The top complaint comes from "Jason L" who said that the touchscreen issue started as a minor problem but has since snowballed into a huge one:
"I picked up my new N7 on Friday. At first the keyboard seemed okay, though it would occasionally register double presses on the keyboard. Now it has gotten progressively worse and the keyboard getting very erratic. It is frequently registering double taps, and often ghost taps in areas not anywhere near where I'm touching on the keyboard. It's almost to the point where it is unusable."
Google representative "Paul" suggested starting the Nexus 7 2 in safe mode to isolate the problem away from any apps that might be the source. But "Jason L" responded a couple days later that he had tried the safe mode suggestion and that it hadn't helped, with other users seconding that opinion. Paul then suggested doing a factory reset (after backing up all media that will be erased through the process), but there's no word yet if that has helped. We'll let you know what fix eventually gets rid of the "ghost touch" problem with the Google Nexus 7 2.
The Google Nexus 7 2 has previously been reported to have GPS issues, where after about 30 minutes of use, the Google Nexus 7 2 drops its GPS connection and can only be reconnected after a restart. After restart though, according to TechSpot's report, the Nexus 7 2 will randomly drop its GPS connection again, after an unspecified amount of time. Google's troubleshooting "Paul" has reported that issue as well, but there's been no word about a fix for that issue.
The Google Nexus 7 2 launched in late July, after Google unveiled the device, along with Android 4.3 and the new Chromecast TV dongle at a press event. The WiFi-only version of the device went on sale immediately on the Google Play Store, with Best Buy, Amazon, and Staples following suit. The Google Nexus 7 2 features a 7-inch display with 1920 x 1200p resolution, powered by a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, clocked to 1.5GHz, and assisted by 2GB of RAM. The device runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, which is Google's newest version of the operating system. The WiFi version of the Google Nexus 7 2 comes in either a 16GB or 32GB internal storage option.
The Google Nexus 7 2 has a release date in the U.K. on August 28, when Nexus 7 fans in that country can get the WiFi version. Google has said an LTE version was slated to get a release date in "the coming weeks" for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the U.S. Hopefully Google will have figured out whatever hardware issues are bugging up the WiFi-only Google Nexus 7 2 before it's released by those carriers.
