Last Monday, FOX’s hit crime drama ‘Bones’ kicked off its mid-season premiere with two episodes, called “The Diamond In the Rough” and “The Archeologist in the Cocoon,” which gave the team at the Jeffersonian two very unique cases to work on.

The first episode of the night, “The Diamond In the Rough,” saw Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) reprise their undercover roles of Buck and Wanda Moosejaw during a ballroom dancing television competition. The two must work undercover among the dancers to figure out who killed their victim, a rising star who was set to win the competition.

Back in the lab, Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and intern Wendell (Michael Grant Terry) try to figure out a way to remove crystals encrusted on the victim’s bones. After digging around, the two discover that one of the dancer’s friends had poisoned her to eliminate her from the competition. While the poison didn’t kill the young dancer, it was discovered that her friend’s boyfriend did.

In the second episode of the night, "The Archeologist in the Cocoon," the team discovers the skeleton of an archeologist entombed in a cocoon high in a tree. The skeleton is later identified as that of James Sutton, who writes books to sell his bogus artifacts. However, it looks like Sutton may have truly made an important discovery concerning thousand-year-old bones that belonged to a couple of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens that appear to have the world's first known inter-species relationship.

Brennan and her intern Dr. Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd) fight over the ancient bones, but Brennan is put on the Sutton case while Edison is put on the inter-species case. During his investigation, Edison discovers that the couple had a small child-a significant discovery. Along with Cam (Tamara Taylor), Brennan discovers that Sutton was killed by exsanguination-major blood loss.

In the end, it turns out that Sutton's publishing partner murdered him with book-end for wanting to publish a scientific article.

The show's upcoming episode, "The Corpse in the Canopy," Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) returns to terrorize the team at the Jeffersonian and this time does it by drugging Hodgins and Angela (Michaela Conlin) and putting a skinned corpse in the canopy above their bed. As if that wasn't terrifying enough, the serial killer also spreads flower petals in their infant son's crib.

TV Guide teases that the team then discover that the remains belong to a Special Forces agent linked to a soldier-for-hire scheme. Not convinced that Pelant isn't trying to seek revenge, Hodgins and Angela ignore Booth's request to let the FBI take over the case and begin an investigation of their own.

'Bones' S8E12, "The Corpse in the Canopy," airs on Monday, January 21 at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
