This weekend three new films open wide with hopes of overthrowing Kathryn Bigelow's controversial film "Zero Dark Thirty." "Mama," "The Last Stand," and "Broken City" open wide with Oscar nominee "Silver Linings Playbook" expanding nationwide. Sundance hit "LUV" opens in select theaters.

The biggest film of the weekend is Guillermo del Toro's "Mama." The film tells the story of Annabel and Lucas who are faced with the challenge of raising Lucas' young nieces that were left alone in the forest for five years. Mama has scored 62 percent approval rating on Rottentomatoes.com with critics stating "if you're into old-school scares over cheap gore, you'll be able to get over Mama's confusing script and contrived plot devices." The film stars Jessica Chastain and opens in 2,647 theaters.

The second film of the weekend "The Last Stand" marks the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the big screen. The film tells the story a drug cartel leader who busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border. He is then forced to face off against a sheriff and his inexperienced staff. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Genesis Rodriguez and Johnny Knoxville. "Stand" opens in 2,913 with an average critics score of 61%.

Also opening is "Broken City" starring Russell Crowe, Mark Wahlberg and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film is about an ex-cop Billy Taggart who seeks redemption and revenge after being double-crossed and then framed by New York City's Mayor Nicholas Hostetler. The film has scored poor reviews with a 21% on Rottentomatoes.com and opens in 2,620 theaters.

The last wide opening is Academy Award nominee "Silver Linings Playbook. Opening in 2,523 theaters, "Playbook" tells the story of former teacher Pat Solitano who moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things however get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own. The film has obtained eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Bradley Cooper and Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence.

In limited theaters, Sundance hit "LUV" opens in NY and LA. The film tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who gets a crash course in what it means to be a man when he spends a day with the ex-convict uncle he idolizes. The film stars Common and has obtained mixed reviews.
