‘Silver Linings Playbook’ actress Jennifer Lawrence defended her “I beat Meryl” comment at the Golden Globes during a visit to David Letterman’s late night show on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old actress told Letterman that she was simply quoting a movie when she made the comment during her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy of Musical on Sunday.

“It’s never a good idea for me to wing it, but it was a quote from ‘First Wives Club’!” she told the late night TV host. “Bette Midler was talking about a Globe—I can’t believe nobody has ever done it before—where she says, ‘Look what it says, it says I beat Meryl.”

The ‘Hunger Games’ actress added, “It was so perfect, and I said it. I had no idea that Lindsay Lohan would take it to the Twitterverse, is that what they call it? I’m not on Twitter, but Twitter is very upset.”

Lohan, the former Hollywood it girl turned trouble starlet, criticized Lawrence’s speech while live-tweeting the Globes on Sunday. “No one should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep,” the 26-year-old ‘Mean Girls’ actress tweeted.

Lawrence responded to Lohan’s comment during her interview and said, “First of all, it’s Meryl Streep. You can’t offend Meryl Streep. And then all of the sudden I hate Meryl Streep. Is that what this turned into? I don’t like Meryl Streep? As if I had my eyes on getting that girl forever and I was like, ‘Finally! I knew it would happen one day!”

Letterman then responded, “What about the dopes that don’t get the joke?”

“I wanted to make a public statement and say, ‘Hey idiots. It’s a quote from a movie,” she responded. “And it’s Meryl Streep.”

According to US Magazine, the 22-year-old actress incidentally also quoted one of Lohan’s movies during the 2013 People’s Choice Awards on January 9. “I wish this was like ‘Mean Girls’ and I could just break this up and throw it on all of you,” Lawrence said during her acceptance speech for Favorite Movie Actress.

Lawrence has received several nominations for her roles in the popular ‘Hunger Games’ and critically acclaimed ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’
