Russell Henley notched his first PGA Tour victory in his first tournament on the tour, winning the Sony Open on Sunday with a 24-under-par 256.

It was just his seventh tournament played. His weekend performance was the second-best score for a 72-hole tournament in PGA Tour history. It was also the best ever score for any participant in the Sony Open by four shots.

Henley finished off his last round with five straight birdies and a 29 on the final nine holes. His fourth round 63 matched his previous low for the course, in each of the first two rounds. His third round was a personal tournament high of 67. Only second place finisher Tim Clark had a better highest round in the entire competition.

The South African Clark finished three strokes behind Henley, notching 64, 66, 66 and 63 stroke rounds. He birdied seven of his last 11 holes, but only made up one stroke on the eventual winner in that span. Clark and Australian Mac Leishman were the only non-Americans in the top 12.

Brad Faxon (2001) and John Huston (1998) held the previous record for lowest score in the Sony Open. Only Tommy Armour III had a lower score in any 72-hole tournament in the 2003 Texas Open (two shots lower).

Charles Howell III and Scott Langley tied for third place in the tournament with -17 scores. Howell III made up four strokes on Langley in the final round of play.

Vijay Singh finished tied for 20th with an 11-under-par 269.

Rory Sabatini tied for 59th place with three strokes under par.

Neither Davis Love III nor K.J. Choi made the cut after the first two rounds.

The next PGA Tour event is the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, starting Thursday, Jan. 17 in La Quinta, Calif.
