The Golden Globes were handed out on Jan. 13 with many surprises that continued to shake up the Oscar race.
The Best Director battle continues to be a mystery as Ben Affleck picked up his second award of the week. Affleck won for his film "Argo" but is not nominated for the Oscar in the directing category. As a result most will have to wait and see whom the Directors Guild of America chooses.
"Argo" won the Best Picture Drama and "Les Miserables" won the Best Picture Comedy/Musical. However these wins do not clarify the Best Picture Oscar race wither. Both films are not nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards and that could prove to be an uphill battle for these movies. The last time a film won Best Picture without a directing nomination was in 1989 when "Driving Miss Daisy" took home the top prize.
The Best Supporting Actor Race continued to be unpredictable, with Christoph Waltz unexpectedly winning the award for his performance in "Django Unchained." Both front-runners Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln") and Philip Seymour Hoffman walked home empty-handed. The race now goes to the SAG Awards before heading to the Oscars. The SAGs should lend some clarity on who the front-runner truly is.
Jessica Chastain won Best Actress in a Drama for her turn in "Zero Dark Thirty; her second award of the week after a victory at the Critics' Choice Awards. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical accolade for her portrayal in "Silver Linings Playbook." The two actresses are the front-runners for the Best Actress Award at the Academy and like the Best Supporting Actor race, the SAG Awards will better define this race.
Some categories at the Globes only solidified the positions of front-runners. Anne Hathaway ("Les Miserables") continued to win for Best Supporting Actress and is now expected to win both the SAG and Oscar awards. Daniel Day-Lewis won for his portrayal as Lincoln and is expected to win the Oscar and SAG awards. Hugh Jackman won Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for "Les Miserables" but is not likely to win any other awards since he is in competition with Day-Lewis.
