Tablets have increasingly taken over many computing tasks formerly relegated to PCs and laptops, but gaming still remains a staple of the mouse and keyboard. Gaming hardware manufacturer Razer is hoping to change that with its new gaming tablet, the Razer Edge, which seems to be a truly competent tablet from initial impressions around the web.
The Razer Edge will come in two models, though both will sport a 10.1-inch screen. The normal variant will retail for $999 and come with an Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia GT640M LE GPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 64GB SSD. The Razer Edge Pro, with an Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 128GB (or 256GB) SSD will cost $1,299. Consumers will also be able to purchase a keyboard dock and various other add-ons that can increase battery life and add ports.
Razer designed the tablet, which is twice as thick as the iPad but only 25 percent heavier, based on crowdsourcing input on what gamers would like in a $1,000 rig.
"This is a full Windows 8 tablet that can run any standard PC game and handle services like Steam just fine. It's also usable as a general purpose tablet, with zippy access to things like e-mail and Web browsing using the touch interface," ArsTechnica writes.
"This is not a scaled-down gaming computer in a tablet. It's an actual gaming computer in a tablet."
The Edge looks to be solid tablet, and if you can afford it, there's probably not a better gaming tablet option out there. Of course, the only downside is the lack of upgradeability and potential battery life issues.
