It may be a New Year, but some feuds refuse to rest. Samsung and Apple have battled for market dominance among smartphone consumers for years, but according to Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston, the Korea-based company will continue to edge out Steve Job's legacy with a steadier output of devices throughout 2013.  

Mawson told Reuters, "Samsung plays in more segments and this should enable it to capture more volume than Apple (assuming Apple does not launch an 'iPhone mini this year)."

As for the iPhone mini, Mawson expects the rumored budget device to land within the next three years, particularly in Asia where Samsung has a stranglehold on the market.

"The iPhone 5 is growing fast and profitably right now, so there is little incentive for Apple to launch an 'iPhone Mini' this year," he adds. "We expect the iPhone mini to be more likely next year, in 2014 when Apple will be forced to discover fresh growth streams."

Statistically, Strategy Anaylitcs predicts 180 million Apple smartphone sales in 2013, compared to Samsung's 290 million. Both companies are expected to see increased revenue as a natural consequence of the smartphone market's global expansion.

Mawson attributes Samsung's advantage over Apple to its "larger multitier portfolio."

This year, Samsung is rumored to launch the Samsung Galaxy S4, which will battle Apple's iPhone 5S, until the Cupertino company inevitably releases the iPhone 6 at the end of the year.
