The Golden Globes have announced their nominations for the 2013 award ceremony and the race for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Comedy or Musical consists of three back-to-back returning nominees (two of which are hosting the ceremony) and two fierce competitors.

Zooey Deschanel: New Girl: The California native born into a showbiz family is nominated for her portrayal of Jess in the Fox comedy 'New Girl.' Deschanel, whose father is the Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and her sister is 'Bones' actress Emily Deschanel, has acted in several hit movies. She is best known for her roles in Elf (2003), Yes Man (2008) and (500) Days of Summer (2009). The 32-year-old actress has been nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award (2012), a Primetime Emmy (2012), a People's Choice Award (2013) and two Satellite Awards (2009 and 2011). She has won a TV Guide Award (2012) and a Mar del Plata Film Festival award (2003). Deschanel is a two-time Golden Globes nominee, both for her role as Jess in New Girl. Along with fellow nominees and the hosts of the Golden Globes Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, Deschanel is a clear favorite for the award.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Veep: The American actress is nominated for roles as Selina Meyer, the Vice President in the HBO comedy Veep. A seasoned TV actress, Louis-Dreyfous is best known for her roles in shows Saturday Night Live (1982-1985), Seinfeld (1990-1998) and The New Adventures of Old Christine (2006-2010). She has been nominated for numerous awards, including 11 Primetime Emmys (1992-1995, 1997-1998, 2007-2010 and 2012), four Satellite Awards (2006-2008 and 2012) and six Screen Actors Guild Awards (1995, 1996, 1999, 2007 and 2010). The 51-year-old actress is also the recipient of several awards, including three Primetime Emmys (1996, 2006 and 2012), five SAG Awards (1995 and1997-1998) and a Star on the Walk of Fame (2010). She has been nominated for the Golden Globes three times and has won once for her role in Seinfeld in 1994. Given her win in the 2012 Primetime Emmys in this very category, Louis-Dreyfus will prove to be a tough contender for the award.

Lena Dunham: Girls: The New York City native is best known for her writing but she's now nominated for her role as Hannah Horvath in her hit TV series for HBO, Girls. Dunham, 26, is also known for her participation in the films Tiny Furniture (2010) and Dealing (2006). The writer/actress has been nominated for several awards for both her writing and her acting, including two WGA Awards (TV), four Primetime Emmys (2012) and two Gotham Awards (2010). She's also won awards for her work on Tiny Furniture, including an Independent Spirit Award (2011) and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award (2010). This is her first Golden Globes nomination and she is bound to give the other nominees a run for their money.

Tina Fey: 30 Rock: The hilarious Pennsylvania local is nominated for her role of Liz Lemon on her hit TV series 30 Rock, which will end its seventh and final season on January 31, 2013. A skilled comedic actress, Fey has also starred in films and hit TV series. She's best known for her roles in Saturday Night Live (1998-2010), Baby Mama (2008) and Mean Girls (2004). Fey has been nominated several times for her work, including five People's Choice Awards (2005, 2009, 2011 and 2012), 16 Primetime Emmys (2001, 2003 and 2007-2012) and eight SAG Awards (2008 and 2010-2013). She has also won numerous awards, including a People's Choice Award (2009), seven Primetime Emmys (2002 and 2007- 2009) and three SAG Awards (2008- 2010). Fey is a veteran Golden Globes-nominee with four nominations under her belt and two wins. Given her history with the Golden Globes and the incredible success of 30 Rock, Fey is a definite frontrunner to win this year's award.

Amy Poehler: Parks and Recreation: This year's other Golden Globes award host, Amy Poehler is nominated for her role as Lesie Knope in the comedy series Parks and Recreation. She has worked in several hit TV shows and films, but is perhaps best known for her roles in Saturday Night Live (2001-2010), Baby Mama (2008) and Mean Girls (2004). Like her fellow co-host Tina Fey, Poehler has been nominated for several awards, including two Daytime Emmys (2009-2010), seven Primetime Emmys (2008-2011) and a Screen Actors Guild Award (2013). Among all her nominations, she has also won a MTV Movie Award in 2009. This is her second nomination and likely to be one of many. Poehler is one of three frontrunners of this race.

Prediction: This was perhaps the hardest race to predict a winner in. All five nominees in this category have a real shot at winning the award and I can see them all taking the Golden Globe home. That being said, co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler along with New Girl Zooey Deschanel are returning nominees that have a slight edge for winning. Given her history and great comedic work, I predict that Tina Fey will win the award. However, the other nominees should not be dismissed.
