Smartphones just seem to keep getting bigger and bigger nowadays. If there's any indication we might be going overboard with screen size, it's the rumored Galaxy Note 3.
The Galaxy Note 3 will allegedly come with a 6.3-inch OLED display, according to a report from Korea Times via SamMobile. The report was based off interviews with local suppliers.
If this is indeed true, then that would make the Galaxy Note 3's screen less than an inch shorter than those of budget tablets like the Google Nexus 7. Granted, a large screen can better utilize the Galaxy Note series' S Pen stylus, but where are we going to draw the line between a mobile device and a computing device?
Android smartphone manufacturers are aggressively pushing the "bigger is better" motto. A few years ago, the first popular touchscreen smartphone, the Apple iPhone. had a screen size of 3.5 inches. Now, most new Android smartphones have displays around 4.5 inches. According to early rumors, flagship phones in 2013 from Samsung, HTC, and Google could have screen sizes as large as 5 inches. Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 already has a 5.55-inch display.
Even Apple has increased the size of the iPhone, finally opting for a 4 inch screen instead of 3.5 inch one with the iPhone 5. There's even talk that next-gen iPhones will be even larger.
It's easy to see why large screens are appealing, especially now that high definition is becoming the norm. With 1080p on your 6.3-inch LTE phablet, a shoddily constructed smartphone suddenly becomes fun to use.
Still, having used the Galaxy Note 2 myself, a line between eye candy and mobility needs to be drawn. If the Galaxy Note 3 does indeed have a 6.3 inch screen, then it'll be interesting to see how pants' pockets will evolve. If there's any current indication, it has to be this.
