As Windows 8, Android 4.1, and iOS 6 vie for consumers' attention, the companies behind each operating system are looking to bring the battle a little closer to home. According to a Wall Street Journal report (via Apple Insider), Google, Microsoft, and Apple have their eyes set on id8 Group R2 Studios, a company which specializes in "home automation technology," which refers to software that connects smart devices to everyday home appliances.

R2 Studio's Google Play profile reads, "R2 enables residential and commercial customers to control AV, lighting, thermostats, security systems, and thousands of other products via their Android device from anywhere in the world." The app is currently compatible with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean).

Apple Insider adds that Apple has demonstrated an interest in home automation as well, with patents ranging from "cable boxes, Playstation gaming controllers and home sprinkler systems."

Business Insider reports that Android is dominating the OS war, with an astounding 75 percent of the market, leaving Apple with only 14.9 percent and Windows Mobile with 2 percent.

Despite the recent jump in iOS 6 adoption rates which coincided with the release of Google Maps, Android's stranglehold among global smartphone consumers' shows no signs of budging.
