The results from Miss Universe 2012 still have the world, or universe, buzzing.

Miss Universe 2012 on Wednesday from the Las Vegas Strip's PH Live at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino where up to 7,000 people were in attendance.

The winner of the night was Miss USA's Olivia Culpo.

Miss USA outlasted 89 other countries and territories, ahead of Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon who finished as first runner up. The fifth place went to Miss Brazil, third place runner up went to Miss Australia, and second place runner up is Miss Venezuela.

Culpo's victory marked the eighth time a Miss USA won the competition, which started back in 1952 with Miss Finland's Armi Kuusela taking the crown 61 years ago.

Preliminary Competition:

Although reaction to her win was mixed, as featured in this report by Latinos Post, her hometown couldn't be happier.

Culpo first entered the Miss USA competition after a victory as Miss Rhode Island. From her hometown of Cranston, Mayor Allan Fund told "The Washington Post" how "mind-boggling" it is to have his town be recognized with Culpo's Miss Universe win.

"To have Olivia perform the way she did, with the poise that she did, coming from where she came from, it provides this really feel good moment," he said Thursday to The Post. "She's going to be a wonderful ambassador for Cranston in particular, her hometown, but our state and our country."

This is not the first time Culpo received attention from Mayor Fung as he presented to her the key to the city after winning Miss USA in June.
