International Samsung Galaxy S2 owners got some bad news earlier this week, and it looks like U.S Galaxy S2 owners are getting let down as well. Carrier AT&T has released a Galaxy S2 Android update, only it's extremely minor, and is Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Jelly Bean.
According to users on XDADevelopers forums, AT&T has released Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy S2 over the air. The update can also be downloaded using Samsung's KIES software. The AT&T Galaxy S2 was previously running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Android 4.0.4 upgrade is an incredibly incremental update that mostly fixes various bugs, and doesn't introduce the slew of new features found in Jelly Bean.
Website GottaBeMobile lists the following as the improvements in Android 4.0.4:
- Improves the AT&T branded application launch process
- An EAS/Office 365 security pop-up fix
- An update to all Google branded applications
The Galaxy S2 is a fairly aged phone in terms of mobile device life cycles, and given that AT&T is just releasing an Android 4.0.4 update while Google already has its unlocked devices at Android 4.2, there's little chance Jelly Bean will be landing stateside anytime soon. International Galaxy S2 owners, however, might see Android 4.1.2 within a couple months.
The Android 4.1.2 update for Galaxy S2 owners was expected to be released by the end of 2012, but a recent posting by Samsung Sweden indicates that it might not make it to the public until Jan. 2013.
