Christmas hadn't been so merry for a man in Germany who tried stealing contraceptives from a condom vending machine.

He died after it blew up.

The incident with the condom vending machine took place in Schoeppingen, near Munster, Germany, according to Metro.

According to the police, the man tried blowing up the condom dispenser via a homemade bomb. Together with two accomplices, the 29-year-old German man who died rigged the machine with explosives in an attempt to steal the money as well as the rubber johnnies inside.

After implanting the bomb on the condom vending machine, they took cover, but the victim who died was unable to close the door of their getaway vehicle before the explosion. When the device exploded, a steel shrapnel hit him in the head, which caused him to be severely wounded.

His two accomplices rushed him to the hospital. At first, they tried to cover up the crime by telling the hospital staff in Schoppingen that their friend simply fell down the stairs and hit his head. However, the staff reportedly became suspicious and contacted the authorities.

One of the two robbers eventually confessed to robbing the condom vending machine when they were questioned by the police. The German man later died that Christmas day from wounds due to the explosion.

According to the BBC, police said the other two accomplices were unable to take neither money nor condoms from the vending machine after the explosion.

The two men were arrested and were later released from custody.
