In yet another dubious advance made possible by modern technology, Pizza Hut has released a perfume they say smells of freshly-baked dough.

The whole affair started as a gag, posted on Pizza Hut Canada's Facebook Page. The fast-food chain joked, "Do you love the smell of a box of Pizza Hut pizza being opened? We thought so. If that smell was a perfume, what would it be called?"

Thousands of fans responded, and Pizza Hut took it one step further when it hired a scent expert to actually design a perfume inspired by pizza.

It took some effort.

"We did a couple of rounds trying to get the right smell," said Beverly D'Cruz, marketing director for Pizza Hut Canada, speaking to the Globe and Mail. "All of them were not fun. You'd think cheese smells nice. Not so."

Finally, the company settled on making the bread the focus, and "Pizza Hut Perfume" was born. (Looks like they ignored their fans suggestions for the name. "Grease Lightning" and "Yeast Seduction" would have been more fun.)

Again, they turned to social media to spread the word.

Pizza Hut Canada offered one of the 110 limited-edition bottles to the first hundred people who commented on the announcement on Facebook. Thousands of people responded, and the bottles have already been mailed out, due to arrive in time for Christmas. Forget pine and pie, pizza is the new scent of the holidays for those lucky (?) winners.

Check eBay in a few days to see if any of them prefers the smell of money and wants to cash in.

Pizza Hut isn't the first fast-food company to go down the pheromone path. In 2008, Burger King released "Flame," a grilled meat-scented body spray for men that sold for under $4 in-store.

And in 2006, Stilton released a perfume modeled after the smell of blue cheese.

There's a reason they were all limited editions.
