Expect new versions of the Microsoft Surface tablet if latest speculations are correct.

The current Surface tablet, known as the Surface with Windows RT, launched on Oct. 26 but has since seen "modest" performance sales, according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Despite the modest sales, Microsoft will be launching their upcoming Surface with Windows 8 Pro next month. The Windows 8 Pro tablet has garnered attention, not necessarily from different features compared to the Windows RT tablet but due to price. The starting price of the Windows 8 Pro tablet starts at $899 for the 64GB model and $999 for the 128GB model. Regardless of the price, it will not feature the keyboard cover and Office suite software, unlike the Windows RT tablet.

However, the Surface with Windows 8 Pro is not part of the rumors circulating.

According to a "well-known Microsoft leaker" named "MS_nerd," three new Surface tablets will launch in 2013.

The leak noted:

- The Surface RT 2 with 8.6-inch display and Qualcomm chipset. The use of Qualcomm is new compared to the current NVIDIA Tegra chip used in the current Surface with Windows RT tablet.

- A Surface with Windows 8 Pro with 11.6-inch display and will use the AMD "Temash" APU (accelerated processing unit) instead of the Intel Core i5 CPU (central processing unit) that the upcoming January launch will have.

- A Surface tablet called the "Surface Book" with 14.6-inch display and will use an Intel chip.

According to PC World, MS_Nerd has been reliable, not perfect, when it comes to leaking Microsoft news. The "Nerd" has accurately stated about details of the Nokia Lumia 920, development of Windows Phone 7, and news of what is known today as the Windows 7.8 update.

The news come as the currently Surface with Windows RT sales have been labeled as "disappointing" by FBR Capital Markets' analyst Craig Berger.

Should Microsoft start planning on the three rumored Surface tablets already despite the "modest" or "disappointing" sales?
