PlayStation4 was released in 2013, but fans are already looking forward to the release of PlayStation5. The next-generation gaming platform is expected to feature several new technologies, features and capabilities.
Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Mobile Studios, recently had an interview with Recode. Apparently, the developers of PlayStation5 were granted full freedom on what they wanted to do with the new gaming console.
“It is really up to the game creators, if they still feel that we need more machine power – ‘We want to realize this and that and that, but we cannot do it with PS4’ – if that is the case, there is a good reason to have PS5. So that developers can create their vision. So, we will see.” Yoshida said.
Yoshida added that Sony will soon become service-oriented, which will move games to new devices that previously did not allow these. The new cloud gaming service, PlayStation Now, will also test-launch soon. There is actually a big question whether PlayStation5 will still be needed six to seven years from now.
Attack of the Fan Boy revealed that Sony has already begun hiring developers that will be working on PlayStation5. Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation) was previously looking for a senior game programmer to help in developing a game for research and development purposes, associated with their next-generation gaming system.
Ben Wilson, editor of PlayStation Magazine, told Tech Radar that PlayStation5 might be a streaming device. Steam on PC has made disc drives less necessary, although these will not be phased out entirely. Geek.com reported that AMD is planning to offer 5x performance for the next PlayStation and Xbox. Currently, the two consoles use custom AMD APUs based on the Jaguar build, resulting to a good and reliable x86 architecture and allowing cross-platform games. AMD is said to be working on a new APU that will be five times better in terms of performance compared to the current-generation component. Gamers might expect future games to run at 4K resolution. Sony and Microsoft has yet to decide whether they will continue working with AMD on their future devices.
However, fans should not expect the PlayStation5 to release anytime soon. The new console may not hit shelves until 2020 Crossmap wrote. In the meantime, gamers can enjoy new and exciting titles and DLCs available for the current-generation platform.
