OnePlus is no stranger when it comes to defying the odds of delivering high-end mobile phones at a pretty reasonable price. The company has been doing it for several years now and without the aggressive marketing push that perhaps Apple and Samsung have been doing with their own flagship devices.
Being covered of course is the main handsets that in all are cheaper than high-end phones in the market such as the OnePlus One and the recently released OnePlus 2. But now there is a third member in the mix with the OnePlus X.
The OnePlus X is a new variant that takes it a level lower if you compare it with the known handsets that the company has offered until now. It is smaller and fashion-oriented device which costs a whole lot cheaper.
How cheap are we talking about? Try $250 for an unlocked version of the OnePlus X.
Now the first thing that comes into mind is what features were taken off? How limited is the OnePlus X.
Well if you think that way, you are not familiar with the kind of devices that OnePlus has been offering through the years. The OnePlus X offers the following features:
- 5-inch 1080p display
- a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
- 3GB of RAM
- 16 GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD up to 128 GB)
- 13 MP main camera
- 8 MP front-facing camera
Running down those specs, it may be hard to believe that this is a phone that teeters along the lines of a budget device. Apparently one should not be fooled by the price, particularly when it is from OnePlus.
The phone will run on the company’s custom OxygenOS on top of the usual Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. There is no word for now on whether the device could be upgraded to the latest Andrdoi 6.0 Marshmallow.
On the outside, the device is encased in a metal shell with two backplate versions. It will be available in a Ceramic and Onyx back. Of the two backplates, the fire-baked Ceramic version seems to be the special version which will be a limited edition with only 10,000 units available. Being a limited edition piece, the Ceramic backplated version is priced higher than the glass-and-metal version of the OnePlus X.
The standard version of the OnePlus X will first be introduced in Europe starting November 5 and will retail for about 269 EUR. It is slated to come out in the United States next by November 19 for just $249.
With regards to the special Ceramic version, the variants will go through the usual invite-system that OnePlus has been implementing starting November 24 at a much higher price of 369 EUR (more or less above $400).
