'Gambit' Still Happening! Doug Liman to Direct Film? [Release Date, Cast, Plot & Rumors]

Out of the three movies that 20th Century Fox has set to debut in 2016, the solo movie for the Cajun superhero Gambit has yet to get off the ground.

With time running out, Fox has set an October release date. Screen Rant reports that the movie may finally have a director in the form of "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman. Rumor has been going around that Channing Tatum himself has personally contacted the director to sign on to the movie.

According to Collider, Liman is no stranger to turbulent movie schedules and rough production times as his movies have been known to not run the smoothest. However, this is still a rumor as other reports have Liman eyeing a sequel to "Edge ofTomorrow."

Thus far, the "Gambit" movie has seen nothing but problems with its preproduction process since being fast tracked due to Tatum's influence earlier this year. First, there was a problem with Tatum himself. Supposedly, the actor was about to leave the project that he started over minor differences. Second, the first director attached to the film, Ruppert Wyatt, left after stating that there were creative differences that he could not get over.

Casting has yet to be completed in the film, with several actresses rumored to be starring opposite Tatum in the movie. One of them was reported to be Lea Seydoux of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" fame. However, the search for a director seems to be the biggest concern for the film at the moment.

While there is no doubt that Gambit is one of the popular characters in the "X-Men" universe, it is yet unsure why the preproduction for the film is hitting so many problems. The other movies for Fox also take place in the "X-Men" universe. "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Deadpool" have already finished filming and are ready for their debuts. Rumors about the delay have spread, ranging from Tatum being difficult to work with, to the script being not very well written and the movie being destined to flop similar to the "Wolverine: Origins" series.

Whatever the case may be, Fox  could use the help of another "X-Men" series as the "X-Men" and "Wolverine" series are winding down, according to Bryan Singer, and the "Deadpool" movie is carrying a Rated R rating. The "Gambit" movie is going to need to fix its problems fast if it is going to attempt to fill the role left by the other departing franchises.
