Dolph Ziggler is believed to be among the frontrunners to succeed John Cena who is expected to vacate the WWE scene temporarily after WWE Hell in a Cell this coming October 25 but the question is how he would go about it?

The perennial face wrestler is best remember from holding off re-signing any contract with the WWE earlier this year and was believed to be asking for a push from the company. Many thought that the said push was in the form of that film, 6:42, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that Ziggler wants a WWE title run.

Seeing that the WWE Heavyweight title could be close to impossible, seeing that Seth Rollins has a fully loaded list of possible successors, the best bet is for Ziggler to reign perhaps as the Intercontinental or United States champion.

The problem with the US Title is that it is held by John Cena (at that time) and the WWE is likely to stick with him as long as he is around.

With Cena’s intent to go on vacation however, all that has changed.

However, the question now is how will the WWE transition from John Cena to the new U.S. champion? This is of course not solely (yet) limited to the Show Off since we have been seeing a lot of other guys step up to the plate.

Leading the pack is no other than the New Day where Big E, Kofi Kingston or Xavier Woods have been mixing it up with Cena in singles competition. Ziggler has been added to the mix and he did take on Cena’s open challenge.

For Ziggler to take the title from Cena, it may require him to turn heel. Seeing a face vs. face wrestler isn’t expected to sell so perhaps this is why we have seen Ziggler slowly evolving to a heel wrestler with dirty tactics.

While there is no official word yet on who Cena would be defending at WWE Hell in a Cell, there are many possibilities.

It could be a one-on-one between Cena and Ziggler. If not Ziggler, it could be a singles match between Cena and one of the New Day members. Better yet, why not get them all in one ring and make it a Fatal Four way? Somehow the odds on that doesn’t seem to favor Cena or Ziggler but we have seen surprise finishes in the past.

If there is no match in the cards, the WWE could go to the ‘out due to injury’ route which has happened so many times in the past already (think Daniel Bryan).

Either way, the WWE will have to come up with something fitting for the United States title. But right now it seems that Ziggler turning heel makes sense. Besides, he has done the heel role before so why not go with that again?

Besides, the WWE can always insert that Lana-Rusev engagement line to transform Ziggler into a heel right now. That is unless it was really done (on purpose) to set up the stage for an anticipated Ziggler reign as the United States champion.
