Many users are expecting the Xiaomi Mi 5 to be out in the market soon, even though the Mi 4c model has just been released in China recently. The Mi 5 is rumored to be among the first handsets to feature the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, as well as an advanced fingerprint scanning technology.

Based on rumors that originated from Chinese social media site Weibo, the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be the first smartphone to showcase Qualcomm's ultrasound fingerprint recognition technology, which will be supported locally by the Snapdragon 820 processor. Qualcomm initially announced the specs for the new fingerprint technology in March 2015, stating that ultrasonic sensors will enhance the accuracy of the feature, as well as make a capacitive sensor unnecessary. Qualcomm referred to the new feature as the Snapdragon Sense ID 3D Fingerprint technology.

Phone Arena explained that the ultrasonic fingerprint recognition component will make a 3D map of the user's finger, including all the micro-ridges of the skin. According to the company, the technology will still function even if the user scans with wet or dirty fingers. Fingerprint scanners at present may not work well or at all unless fingers are properly placed and are clean.

Furthermore, the new technology's ultrasonic sensor can read fingerprints via different materials like plastic, metal and glass. This removes the need for a capacitive sensor on the external area of the handset. Xiaomi can position the sensor behind the display, which will provide more space and aesthetics on the device. Xiaomi did not provide much details on how the new Snapdragon Sense ID 3D Fingerprint technology will be integrated in the upcoming Mi 5, but it is expected to improve overall user interface and experience.

NDTV revealed that the Xiaomi Mi 5 is also poised to become one of the most powerful smartphones of the year when it releases. Aside from the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, it will reportedly have 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 530 GPU. The phone may have a 5.3-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 and a pixel density of 554pi. It is also said to include 16GB or 64GB of internal memory, but non-expandable. The Mi 5 will reportedly have a 16-megapixel rear shooter with dual-LED flash and a 3030mAh battery. It may also have a USB Type-C 3.0 port.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone model is expected to be released before 2015 ends. More updates and details are expected in the following weeks.
