Xavi Hernandez is the longest tenured player in Barcelona history and despite being 32 years old, continues to prove why he is one of the greatest ever.
The midfield maestro had a solid 2011-12 season with 10 goals and seven assists in 31 matches. However, his greatest contributions in 2012 came in June when he led Spain to the Euro 2012 championship. He commanded the Spanish midfield with confidence and proved to be a tremendous leader when his team was not at its best in the early stages of the tournament. He did not register a single point until the final game when he broke out for two vital assists, including one on the second goal of the match that gave Spain a comfortable 2-0 lead.
He is currently off to an equally strong start for Barca in 2012-13 with three goals and two assists. He also has two assists in the current UCL campaign.
Best Moment of the Year: His two assists in the final helped Spain become champions in Euro for the second straight tournament.
Chances at the Top Three: Quite good actually. With Ronaldo and Messi locked for the first two spots, it is inevitable that FIFA looks to recognize a Spaniard, if only for the national team's dominant run at the Euro 2012. Andres Iniesta seems like an obvious choice due to his individual honors for the Euro and UCL tournaments, but Xavi has long established himself as the brain behind the midfields of Barcelona and Spain.
