LG will officially join the PC market in the United States with its new LG Gram laptop model. The ultra-slim and ultra-light device is said to be lighter than the smallest MacBook Air.
IGN revealed that the laptops will be available in three models and will be pre-installed with Windows 10. There will be a 13-inch and a 14-inch model that both weigh 980 grams, or 2.16 pounds. These are lighter compared to the 11-inch and 13-inch Apple MacBook Air models. Furthermore, the LG Gram will feature 1080p displays which are expected to provide better visuals at a higher resolution compared to the MacBook Air. The base models will be powered by an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM.
However, IGN cited that the new LG Gram laptops might feel flimsy because of the type of material used. These have an average battery life of 7.5 hours, which is shorter than the MacBook Air. The 14-inch model is powered by a 2Cell Li-Polymer 4555mAh battery. There are two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI video output and Micro-SD.The devices also do not have a keyboard backlight and SD card reader.
LG presented the 14-inch model, stating that it is made of tough and advanced materials, namely carbon magnesium and lithium magnesium. The IPS display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and reportedly delivers blur-free images and enhanced colors. It has an Intel HD Graphics 5500 card and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. There is also a Reader Mode that lets users to view the screen for a longer period of time without straining their eyes. The laptop boasts of a digital-to-audio converter (DAC) which provides hi-fi quality sound with minimal noise and distortion. The device also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. The laptop is just 0.5 inch thin while the bezel is only 7.2mm. The 13-inch model is made of durable magnesium alloy with a 4.4mm bezel.
The 13-inch LG Gram measures 11.9 x 8.4 x 0.5 inches, while the 14-inch version measures 12.8 x 8.9 x 0.5 inches. The laptops come with a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year.
The 13-inch and 14-inch models will also have a 128GB SSD at a retail price of $899 and $999, respectively. The 14-inch model with an Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB SSD will retail at $1399. The laptops are already available at Microsoft Stores, Microsoft online and Amazon.
