The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS is expected to roll out on the Moto X (2013) and Moto X (2014) soon. Later on, users may receive updates for the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system, as well.

There are speculations that Motorola is preparing for the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to roll out on the two devices, after it was revealed that the Moto G (2013) and Moto G (2014) will get updates to the same OS. There were previous reports that the Android 5.1.1 will become available in December 2015 or January 2016, Yibada reported.

Some users claimed that they already acquired the soak test being rolled out in two parts. The second part is the bigger 712MB file that updates the handset to Android 5.1.1. The final system version is 222.26.7. If the test renders good results, the software might become available before the end of September 2015.

Furthermore, the Moto X (2013) and Moto X (2014) are also said to receive updates to the new Android M Marshmallow, based on the same Yibada report. However, it is likely that the two will be last in priority in receiving the updates.

The OS is said to debut on September 29, 2015 together with the new Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones. There are talks that the two will feature the Android Marshmallow OS out of the box. The Moto X Style and Moto X Pure Edition will also reportedly be the first smartphones to get the Android M update. Motorola used to be a mobile division of Google, and is known to be among the first to receive new updates as soon as it acquired the Android OS source code. Roll out delays may sometimes occur when carriers need to release the OS upgrades to the handsets first.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop was previously rolled out to the first-generation Moto X in June 2015. The software update was made available in the United States, Canada and Brazil, Tech Times reported. Those who have a carrier variant of the Moto X (2013) needed to wait longer, since the update was specifically for the unlocked retail variant. The same approach will most likely be used in the new OS update.

The update provided several improvements and bug fixes, so the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is also expected to feature the same benefits for Moto X users. Users only need to wait for the soak test results to come in successfully and they can expect the OS to make the enhancements soon.
