'Transformers 5' Release Date, Cast, Plot, Rumors: Mark Wahlberg to Return to Franchise?

Fans of the hit movie series "Transformers" might no longer need to ask if there will be a continuation of the flick after the events of "Age of Extinction" -- as it turns out, Mark Wahlberg will be back in the movie and fans will even get to see an animated movie.

According to a report by Deadline, renowned American TV and movie writer, director and producer Akiva Goldsman will be writing the script for the fifth installment of the franchise that will follow the events on "Transformers: Age of Extinction."

Thus, the news outlet furthered that the planned "Transformers 5" will feature, once again, Wahlberg as the inventor Cade Yeager whom we first saw in "Age of Extinction" while Michael Bay will be up again to take the reins as director.

The idea for the story of the fifth "Transformers" movie came after weeks of brainstorming and collaboration with Ken Nolan ("Black Hawk Down"), Robert Kirkman ("Walking Dead"), Art Marcum and Matt Holloway ("Iron Man"), Zak Penn ("Pacific Rim 2"), Jeff Pinkner ("Amazing Spider-Man 2"), Steven DeKnight ("Spartacus) as well as Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari ("Ant-Man"), Christina Hodson and Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

Deadline also mentioned that the group, supervised by Goldsman, all pitched their ideas to Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay and Paramount as well as to Brian Goldner of Hasbro and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Don Murphy.

Meanwhile, in a tweet, Bay pointed out that it is neither confirmed nor official that he will be directing "Transformers 5," but he mentioned that he is currently discussing the project with Spielberg.

On the other hand, Deadline, likewise, highlighted the creation of an animated spin-off for "Transformers." According to the report, Barrer and Ferrari were tasked to write the script on the proposed animated feature.

Screen Rant cited that the animated feature, which will serve as an origin story of the Transformers' planet Cybertron, could be the Cybertron prequel movie that has been rumored for quite a time already.

The TV and movie news outlet also added that having the animated origin story will be a great move as fans have been clamoring for a long time to tackle the early beginnings of the Autobots and Decepticons on their home planet, adding that this will enable the story to highlight the robotic alien race rather than the humans.

There is not yet any official release date for the "Transformers 5." However, it is expected to be at the theaters by 2017 while the animated feature is expected to follow after.
