Apple's latest mobile OS update rolled out at about 10:00 a.m. PT. However, not long afterwards, an increasing number of users complained about hitches in the iOS 9 upgrade.

"iPhone owners who attempted to download the software were given error messages," Mashable observed. "If you're seeing the same error messages, know that this is pretty common with new software updates."

"Millions of users worldwide are pinging Apple's servers to grab the update. It may be smart to just wait and download iOS 9 later when their servers aren't so slammed," the tech news source added.

To ensure a smooth-sailing upgrade to iOS 9, it's essential to prepare your device for this process before doing the actual update.

First, you should have no less than 1.3GB of free space in your smartphone or tablet. That's how the new update's file size will be. However, it's best to make a bit more room than that in your gadget, just in case.

As it's been recommended in previous updates, backup your mobile device to spare yourself of the trouble of losing important data. You can either backup to iTunes or iCloud, although Phone Arena recommends the former as it "will make a full copy of your existing setup (files, apps, settings, and all), whereas an iCloud backup won't backup any of your media content that you didn't purchase from the iTunes Store, as well as photos you've manually uploaded."

What if you've already shifted to the public beta version of iOS 9? You have to manually downgrade it to a previous iOS version before you can shift to the official upgrade.

Should you be ready for the download, try doing so via iTunes instead of Wi-Fi, Mashable recommended. Some users have been able to get iOS 9 successfully using this method.

You may also want to delay the upgrade a few days later as the failed OS download has been suspected to be due to Apple's servers having a hard time coping with onslaught of download requests.

For those who are not yet sure whether to shift to the new OS version, perhaps the features of the upgrade should help you decide.

Some of the highlights of the new iOS version are improved battery life, smarter Siri, a low power mode, upgraded Apple Maps, better multitasking feature (for newer iPad models), better Notes, and the inclusion of "News," as noted by Forbes.

Additionally, it will also resolve a major iOS 8 headache - WiFried.

"Yes, iOS 9 rips out the networking protocols introduced in iOS 8 and actually goes back to the instruction set used in iOS 7 so finally this infuriating bug can be put to rest," Forbes said further.
