There are rumors that the upcoming iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will feature an upgraded version of the Force Touch technology. The new pressure-sensitive screen will most likely be referred to as the “3D Touch Display”.

9to5Mac reported that one of the key features of the new Apple flagship smartphones will be the Force Touch. The two devices will be unveiled with the next-generation version of the Force Touch, called “3D Touch Display”. At present, the Apple Watch and MacBook trackpads function on two levels of pressure and are able to distinguish between a tap and a press. However, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be able to work on three pressure levels. The 3D Touch Display can distinguish a tap, a press and a deeper press, sources said.

The name “3D Touch Display” is actually based on the enhanced Force Touch sensor’s increased sensitivity to three levels of pressure. Users may be able to use shortcut gestures and other interface functions on the iPhone 6s.

Computer World stated that the 3D Touch Display will be introduced on September 9, 2015, while the two new Apple iPhones will be released on September 18.

Based on the same report by 9to5Mac, a user can search a point of interest in the Maps application, and then Force Touch on the destination to immediately commence turn-by-turn directions. The Force Touch gesture will skip having to click on the navigation logo on the map view and clicking a button to begin the navigation. Users can also Force Touch on a listed track in the Music app to see several commonly used actions. The Force Touch gesture will become an alternative to having to click the actions button found on the right portion of each track listing. For example, if a user deep presses on the listing for a song, he will find a menu that will immediately add the song to a playlist or save the song for offline listening.

Another source said that deep pressing on the Phone app icon will allow a user to shortcut directly to the Voicemail tab. If a user deep presses the News app icon to be brought straight to the For You tab or Favorites tab. Force Touching an app icon on the Home screen will let users create shortcuts for their most frequently used programs. 9to5 Mac wrote that some of the Force Touch gestures will stem from the recent MacBooks. Users can preview webpages, contact cards and map views as well.

The new 3D Touch Display will most likely work with the new Taptic Engine to give physical feedback to users.
