The list of actresses who may take the female lead role in the upcoming film “Ready Player One” has been narrowed down to five. There are rumors that Elle Fanning may be on top of the running.

The Wrap exclusively reported that producer Steven Spielberg will be choosing among Elle Fanning (Super 8, Maleficent), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying, Ouija), Lola Kirke (Mistress America, Gone Girl), plus two other unnamed actresses.

Dakota Fanning’s sister, Cooke and Kirke are reportedly vying for the role of Art3mis. In the story, Art3mis is the avatar of Samantha Cook in a virtual reality world called the Oasis. There is still no news on the potential actors who will take on the role of main protagonist Wade Watts. Watts is an Oasis user who starts a series of challenges with the chance to win a huge prize.

Among the potential lead female actresses, Fanning has the most experience, The Wrap wrote. She previously played the female lead in the Spielberg-produced movie “Super 8”. She is also very familiar with Spielberg, since the latter previously worked with her sister, Dakota Fanning, in “War of the Worlds”, in which Spielberg served as director.

Elle Fanning’s will next star in “About Ray” and “Trumbo”. Both movies will be presented at the Toronto International Film Festival. Fanning also recently finished shooting “Neon Demon” and is slated to co-star in “Live By Night”.

Olivia Cooke won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance for her role in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”. She will also appear in “Star Wars: Episode VIII” and “Katie Says Goodbye”.

Lola Kirke will appear next on “Mena” and “Fallen”.

Spielberg is said to be planning on picking the female star before completing his current projects, “The BFG” and “Bridge of Spies”. Spielberg will produce the upcoming film together with Dan Farah, Donald De Line and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Bruce Berman will function as executive producer. Zak Penn adapted the bestselling book of the same title by Ernie Cline. Warner Bros. partnered with DreamWorks and Village Roadshow on the new project.

Warner Bros. has not yet commented on the issue.

The “Ready Player One” movie adaptation by Spielberg is slated to hit theaters on December 15, 2017.

More news and updates on the lead male and female roles and supporting cast members in “Ready Player One” are expected soon.
