McDonald’s will officially be serving breakfast day and night all across the United States. The company announced that the breakfast offer will start on October 6, 2015.

McDonald’s America President Mike Andres told the Wall Street Journal that extending breakfast hours has been the biggest move by the company since adding the McCafe beverage line in 2009. He said that it was due to customer demand and the move would be the catalyst to their turnaround.

Traditionally, the breakfast offers were only available up to 10:30 a.m.

McDonald’s said on September 1, 2015 that breakfast will be available any time of the day. There will be two kinds of markets for the all-day breakfast. The first will provide McMuffin sandwiches and no biscuits, while the second will provide biscuits and no McMuffin sandwiches. There will also be sausage burritos, platters and side dishes, NBC News reported. A number of McDonald’s restaurants reportedly started testing the new menu many months before, and the official menu change is set to happen early in October 2015.

The all-day breakfast offer is one of many changes made under CEO Steve Easterbrook. Easterbrook mentioned in the earnings report that he aims to modernize McDonald’s. In a July quarterly earnings report, it was shown that there were fewer diners visiting McDonald’s restaurants, despite the company beating earnings and revenues estimates.

Although there were many McDonald’s fans that took the news positively, there were also a number of skeptics who thought that offering all-day breakfast might lead to long term consequences for the company, which has over 418,000 branches.

Loren Grush stated on The Verge that the case covers a basic principle of economics, wherein scarcity creates demand. Customers are driven to restaurants at certain times of the day to avail of limited supplies. There are also very popular items on the breakfast menu, while others tend to sell less frequently and might even suffer if offered throughout the day. Grush said that the bottom line is that the McDonald’s breakfast is special because people cannot get it anytime they want.

Kaitlyn Tiffany also stated on The Verge that there will also be added burden on the McDonald’s crew who do not work the breakfast shift, since they have to prepare regular meals and the breakfast offers within the same span of time. Employees will be dealing with twice the variety of products, and will take longer to serve customers.

Until real predicaments happen, the McDonald’s all-day breakfast will be arriving on October 6. More updates and feedbacks from both customers and crew are expected in the coming weeks.
