Fans of the survival horror genre should be happy to know that video game developer Capcom has officially announced that "Resident Evil 2" will get a remake for the next generation of consoles.

Gamespot revealed that the game will be headed by Resident Evil veteran Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. Hirabayashi was also the producer of the recent "Resident Evil HD Remaster" as well as part of Capcom R&D Division 1.

Hirabayashi shares that this project has been mainly approved due to the passion and persistence of all the fans of the game. The Japanese producer states that fans of "Resident Evil 2" have been calling for a remake of the game and that Capcom just hasn't been able to make it. Hirabayashi does say that the game is in its very early development stages and that it could be a while before it does actually come out. However, Hirabayashi does promise the fans that Capcom R&D Division 1 will be updating gamers on every step of the development so that they are well informed on what is happening.

According to Kotaku, Capcom has been teasing about the "Resident Evil 2 HD Remaster" on their Facebook Page but only have officially announced the game today. Critics also believe that the official announcement has been green lighted because of a recent fan-made "Resident Evil 2" game.

Hirabayashi also goes on to say that this will be a remake and not an HD remaster game. The difference between the two is that a remake will be getting certain changes to the game with better graphics, while a HD remaster edition is just the same game as the original with updated graphics and tweaked controls.

Remastered games have been a success for Capcom lately, with the PC version of the "Resident Evil HD Remaster" breaking sales records for a digital game in both America and in Europe. Along with the announcement of "Resident Evil 2 Remake," Capcom also announced that they will be making a remaster port of the Gamecube exclusive game, "Resident Evil 0." "Resident Evil 1 HD Remaster" sales has also been higher than first expected by Capcom, showing that there may be more interest on the other titles in the franchise.

Currently, there is no word on which consoles "Resident Evil 2" will be available on. Also, Hirabayashi has stated that the game is in its early stages of development and there is no news on a release date yet.
