Similar to other galactic bodies, our own universe will reach its end. A new study confirmed that the universe is gradually dying.

The new research is part of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) project, the biggest multi-wavelength survey arranged, which involved several of the most powerful telescopes in the world to measure the energy output of about 200,000 galaxies.

The findings were presented by the scientists on August 10, 2015 at the International Union XXIX General Assembly, indicating that our universe will end quietly. Stars are becoming dimmer at present. Washington Post reported that according to their observations of the galaxies using over 21 various wavelengths of light to measure energy output, the universe is dimming. About 2 billion years ago, the energy output in the portion of the universe that they studied was twice larger.

The universe actually reached its peak period of star formation long ago. Based on the law of physics, usable energy will waste away at growing rates into forms that stars can no longer use. With fewer stars, there will be fewer opportunities for life to thrive and evolve. In the future, the universe will only host a few dim stars that will also deteriorate as time passes.

Simon Driver, lead researcher from the University of Western Australia, explained that while most of the energy moving around in the universe was produced in the aftermath of the Big Bang, more energy is being generated by stars nonstop as these fuse elements like hydrogen and helium together. The new energy will either be absorbed by dust as it moves through the host galaxy or moves out into intergalactic space until it collides with another celestial body like a planet or star.

"The Universe will decline from here on in, sliding gently into old age. The Universe has basically sat down on the sofa, pulled up a blanket and is about to nod off for an eternal doze,” Driver said.

"It’s going to be a long process; I guess we've got worse things to worry about at some level. In about 5 billion years the sun is going to swell up and swallow the Earth; in about 10 billion years it’s going to collide with the nearest [major] galaxy, the Andromeda galaxy; and in about 100 billion years the universe will be so expanded and producing so little light that we basically won’t see anything,” Driver told the Los Angeles Times.
