The award-winning video game, "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic," was released over 12 years ago and ported to various consoles over the decade. Now, a possible remake is in the works for the highly praised role-playing galactic battle.

A report from Cinelinx cited three separate sources, all claiming that a "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" remake is indeed in the works and an announcement from EA and Disney is expected in the coming months. There are also rumors that the game could be exclusive on Xbox consoles, given that the original version of the game was console-exclusive as well.

In addition, if the purported Knights of the Old Republic remake end up to be true, Cinelinx also mentioned that the game will be set for a release in the third of fourth quarter of 2016.

On the other hand, Game Rant noted that given the recent attention given to the "Knights of the Old Republic" sub-series, a remake was not far from impossible. The report pointed that the game had a number of updates in recent years to be playable in various devices while one of the main characters from the game, Darth Revan, was included in BioWare's MMORPG "Star Wars: The Old Republic."

Moreover, just recently, "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 II - The Sith Lords" was given an official update on Steam and Mac support which, according to Cinelinx, was an unusual and surprising move for a decade-old game. This move prompted the speculations that "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" would be having a remake and all that had been done were ways to tease the public before the official announcement was made.

While the report by Game Rant did consider that a remake of the game was possible, it, however, doubted that the Xbox exclusivity will pursue, considering the business aspect, as it would be hard to ignore the bigger install base that PS4 can give, not to mention that the exclusivity clause could make gamers disappointed.

Though it is still a rumor, if the announcement would be made, Game Rant predicts it could fuel and add up to the excitement created by the "Episode 7: The Force Awakens," set to be released on December, as well as the return of "Star Wars Battlefront," which was promised to have epic ship combats and fiery first-person gameplay.

Cinelinx also believe that even though "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" is an old game and seems to be no longer relevant, its rich history and established fan base can make the case for a conceivable return.
