'Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F' Review: Should You Watch It?

The "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F" English dub has been released on theatres around the U.S. Should you watch it now or should you wait for the home video release?

It seems that the "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F" English dub is a hit among moviegoers as FUNimation Entertainment confirmed that the limited theatrical run of the film has been a success.

According to the official press release from FUNimation Entertainment, the theatrical release of "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F" opened in 894 theatres across the U.S. as it earned about $1.97 Million in the box office.

Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation admitted that the company made a strategic decision to make sure that their marketing and fan engagement events would lead to a huge reception to the film despite it having a limited theatrical run.

"We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive fan response to the movie. We knew the opening would be very good but its performance has exceeded everyone's expectations," DuBoise announced. He added, "From our theatrical marketing campaign and fan engagement events to our expanded theatrical footprint and the specially produced 15-minute pre-show, FUNimation made a strategic decision to make Dragon Ball Z accessible to anime fans both old and new and it has paid off."

Meanwhile, David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation, admitted that their marketing attempts wouldn't have mattered if the film wasn't good. He noted that positive reviews for the film and that the fans themselves should be considered when factoring the success of the film.

"This film is a resounding victory on all levels," Wengrod said. He went on to say, "The combination of our careful choice of release dates, an enticing marketing campaign that theaters embraced and fans universally accepted, and all of the great reviews added up to a terrific opening for us."

What are the critics saying about the film?

IGN gave the film an 8.0 as it notes that the film delivers on the action and animation. They've also stated that Frieza being the villain in the film made the movie shine. However, they note that the "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F" is a bit too safe and it doesn't branch out from the typical "DBZ" formula.

"Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' fits well within the franchise and carries on its essence. The action is fast, the animation is great, and having Frieza back, acting like the evil villain he is, really made this movie shine. Ultimately, the film plays it too safe, and lacks any meaningful punch when the credits roll," said IGN.
