July is on the verge of closing and until now, there is no official word on whether the Floyd Mayweather, Jr and Andre Berto fight will indeed get it on this coming Sep 12, 2015 in Las Vegas.

To most, it is a no-brainer that the fight is as good as done and an official announcement is only to make it official. The fight is not really a big deal considering that the face-off is obviously something to help Mayweather reach that much coveted 49-0 card which will allow him to match Rocky Marciano’s feat.

But the real question is will it really be Mayweather’s Swan song? Is it really his last match?

Many believe that his coming match is more of a tune-up (as reasoned out by Stephen A. Smith) rather than a farewell fight. Mayweather could very well fighting again in 2016 and two names are being mentioned – Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.

Whoever between the two stands out, it is apparent that Mayweather is looking at the money angle.

A Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight is still expected to rake in revenue though probably not as large as the one he got in May 2, 2015.

The same goes for Miguel Cotto which could be a good draw, assuming that the Puerto Rican champion is able to hack out an impressive win against Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez.

Could these possibilities be a reason why Mayweather has not made any official announcement as far as his September 12 fight with Berto is concerned?

ESPN’s Dan Rafael had initially reported that there are issues over at the Mayweather camp and it involves contract extension talks.

His upcoming fight is the final one for his six-fight contract with CBS but apparently the network is not ruling out the idea of Mayweather still fighting in 2016.

Though Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza shot down the claim of Rafael, it does make sense especially when you think about the business angle.

After somehow curtailing and opting to face a relatively easy fight against Berto, Mayweather’s sudden about-face to his earlier plan of a “solid” fighter has raised a lot of eyebrows. Though that is beyond control right now, it is hard to think that Mayweather would end his career on a less heralded fighter.

Recall that Amir Khan was the logical choice but even the British southpaw admitted that it will already be Berto. There were only two names mentioned – Berto and Karim Mayfield, another less heralded name.

Hence, seeing CBS covering all bases as far as Mayweather’s fight and possible future ones is only to be expected. Though they were denied, one cannot hide the fact that it could be a reason.

If contract talks are not to be blamed then what? Whatever happens, Mayweather is fighting Berto on Sep 12, 2015 unless something dramatic is announced. Seeing that there is barely enough time to train for any other boxer, the only thing left right now seems to be an official announcement.
