There are talks that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be coming soon. It will reportedly have a foldable design, applying the technology that the company unveiled at CES 2013.

Value Walk wrote that the Galaxy S7 will be a vital release for the company, considering how Samsung has struggled in the past to cope with the trends and technologies showcased by its top competitor Apple. The Galaxy S6 was somehow well-received by users, so a great Galaxy S7 might put the tech company back in top form. Samsung is allegedly eyeing to present the flexible display technology that was available as a prototype. Such a display would include a wide array of display types like curved, foldable, unbreakable and rollable, according to Samsung.

The newer smartphones launched by Samsung, such as the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy Round can be categorized as curved. There were rumors that Samsung would unveil a foldable commercial handset before 2015 ends. Lee Chang-hoon of Samsung Display previously indicated that it would be possible to produce 30,000 to 40,000 flexible displays every month by the end of the year. He emphasized Samsung’s plan to launch a foldable product by the end of 2015, although the internal structure has not yet been finalized. Based on another Value Walk report, Samsung Display confirmed that it is working on various types of flexible displays and handset partners, but there is still no definite plan on the official release date and schedule.

“Mr. Lee belongs to Samsung Display Co., Ltd. developing and manufacturing flexible display panels. Samsung Display is developing flexible panels for various types of devices. Set-makers are able to make consumer electronics devices by using the panels of Samsung Display. However, nothing has been specifically decided with your question,” Chang-hoon told Forbes.

Samsung is still quiet about the foldable display concept, even though Nokia and LG shared their plans to feature similar products too. Insiders said that one Samsung official stated that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be feasible in 2016. In the meantime, users will have to wait for official confirmation from Samsung that it is indeed developing a foldable smartphone, with the technology to debut on the new Samsung Galaxy S7. Based on the limited information, Samsung has not dropped the concept and will most likely reveal it when ready.

LG, on the other hand, announced that it is investing $1.3 billion to boost the development of foldable OLED displays. The commercialization target date is in 2017, based on the same Forbes report.
