The war between Samsung and Apple only intensifies following new numbers showing the South Korean company selling more units in the third quarter.

For the first time, Samsung's Galaxy S3 sold 18 million units to the iPhone 4S' 16.2 million units. The sales numbers gives the Galaxy S3 as the world's best-selling smartphone in the last quarter.

Prior to Samsung's dominance, the Apple dominated the sales charts for more than two years, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Samsung recorded record profits between the July to September period, earning $7.3 billion in profits, according to Reuters.

However, Samsung's victory could be short lived as the iPhone 5 might dethrone the Galaxy S3. Strategy Analytics analysts reported that one reason the Galaxy S3 went on top was because Apple customers or regular customers were waiting for the iPhone 5, which launched in retailers on Sept. 21 in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and several other countries before expanding across Europe on Sept. 28.

According to Apple, the first three days following the Sept. 21 launch saw the iPhone 5 sell over five million units.

"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," said Apple CEO Tim Cook back in September. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

"Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world's most popular smartphone model," said Neil Mawston of Strategy Analytics.
