The young royal fourth in line to the British throne has been christened July 5 at a historic church said to be "used by royals since Queen Victoria's time," USA Today noted.

Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - otherwise known as Prince William and Kate Middleton - was baptized at St. Mary Magdalene church on the Sandringham estate about 2 months after her birth. The event was witnessed by five godparents - a number which was notably 2 pairs less than those of her big brother Prince George. None of the godparents were from "royal circles," as well.

"The five include Catherine's cousin Adam Middleton, William's cousin Lady Laura Fellowes and Thomas van Straubenzee, a friend of the duke's," the BBC reported. "The final two are the duke's friend James Meade - who read the lesson during the service - and the duchess's friend Sophie Carter."

"William and Kate have turned to their close friends and their close family to fulfil this role," the news source went on to point out. "William's mother, Diana, may have been absent, but she wasn't forgotten. One of her relatives is a godmother and the chosen church was where she too was baptised."

The said event, typically a grand one, was described to have blended "royal tradition with concessions to the demands of royal fans and the modern media," according to USA Today.

"Only a handful of people were invited to the picturesque church on the Queen's Sandringham Estate, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also have a home," CNN observed.

However, the couple had invited the general public to an area away from the church grounds to share their joy in their second child's christening.

"This is all in stark contrast to Prince George's christening at a chapel in central London, where there was no public access. Prince William, is constantly trying to balance his family's privacy and the public interest," CNN added.

As for the guests, the event involved only a handful of them. Aside from the Cambridges and Princess Charlotte's godparents, the guest list included the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Carole Middleton, Michael Middleton, Pippa Middleton and James Middleton, according to ITV News.

Princess Charlotte was baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who was supported by the Rector of the Sandringham parishes, The Reverend Canon Jonathan Riviere.

The christening was then culminated by tea at Sandringham House.
