Eight months after launching the first two products in the Hero4 series, GoPro has outdone itself once more by releasing a new camera. This time, it's even smaller and lighter than any other GoPro that ever existed.

"The new GoPro Hero4 Session is the size of an ice cube, about half that of previous GoPros. It can fit into the spokes of a bike, hang onto the end of a fishing pole or turn a toddler into a documentary filmmaker," said a Wall Street Journal review. "It isn't the best-quality camera GoPro has ever made, but it's so small and simple that I'm likely to keep using it."

Called the Hero4 Session, the new camera can shoot video footage "up to 1080p at 60 frames per second (fps)," Engadget noted.

"It also has many of the modes existing GoPro users will be accustomed to: 1440p (4:3) at 30 fps, 720p at 100 fps, 960p (4:3) and so on," the tech news portal continued. "The full list (there are many more variations) is not as exhaustive as the Hero4 Silver or Black, but all the most used slow-motion and 4:3 perspectives (good for point-of-view shots) are there."

The most innovative aspect about the Session is its size: it's about 50% smaller than the Hero4 clad in waterproof housing and is also about 40% lighter. It is also waterproof and submersible (up to 10 meters) without the need for a casing. Officially, it measures 1.4 inches and weighs just 2.3 ounces.

According to Fast Company, the Session was made in response to "athletes who have been asking for a smaller, lighter, and more discreet camera they can use to shoot video and photos during competitions."

It's also worth noting that GoPro had actually been working on such a camera since 2011. It was later granted a patent earlier this year.

Aside from its small size and improve lightness, the Session distinguishes itself with the one-button operation that makes digital photography and video recording an even easier affair.

"The new device has just a single button that is used to turn on the camera and almost immediately start shooting video or photographs," Fast Company said, adding that it only takes a second to begin recording after activating the button and that battery life is extended as the camera does not need to be kept on or idle.

While some may think of the Session as an entry level one, the company said it is not as the device's features are "much more aligned with the Hero4 Silver." At $399, the device is certainly not one that could be lumped with other entry-level cameras.

The GoPro Hero4 Session will be available in various parts of the globe starting July 12 this year.
