Sony Xperia users may now receive a preview of the upcoming Android M.

Sony Mobile reported that users can create a test image of Google’s Android M Developer Preview and flash it onto any Sony Xperia device using Sony’s Open Device program. The new preview provides developers the needed tools to get ready for the full version of Android M. Users should expect a number of system changes and API behavioral adjustments with the new Developer Preview. The changes include a new permission system that lets users manage app permissions during runtime directly.

Meanwhile, users are advised to test their apps before the Android M launch to observe the recent adjustments and check for compatibility. If an Xperia device is listed in the Open Device program, users may follow the given guide on how to build the AOSP M Developer Preview and download the needed software binaries. The AOSP software was not intended or certified for regular use and is only available for products with an unlocked boot loader and with a number of limitations.

Sony Mobile clarified that what they provided were build instructions based on the AOSP project, to give custom ROM developers an early preview of the Android. Currently, the API levels are at Lollipop MR1 and what they have shown is the Android M Developer preview from a platform perspective only. The preview will be useful in helping people become more familiar with the upcoming OS when it launches, most like in the third quarter of 2015.

Android Pit reported that in the Sony video, the Android M was featured on what appeared to be a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The video showed the contacts, dialer window, new icons, notification shade and recent apps. The apps drawer, however, was not found. Sony stated that the modem and camera are not yet working in the meantime.

PC Mag cited that developers using a Nexus 5, 6, 9 or Google Nexus player may begin exploring the Android M Developer Preview. The compatible Sony Xperia devices include the Z1, Z2 and Z3 families, Z, ZL, Z Ultra and Tablet Z. Google previously cited that there will be thousands of bug fixes and tweaks in the upcoming Android M 6.0. There will also be new features and capabilities such as Doze, USB-C support, Android Pay integration and Chrome Custom Tabs. The new OS will reportedly be called “Macadamia Nut Cookie”, but users have to wait a few more weeks for the official announcement.
