From rumors to reality - that's how one could describe the trajectory of the upcoming "Independence Day" movie.

Recently, the sequel to the 1996 box office hit has finally been given a title and the basic plot revealed. Then there's the photo of the cast circulated on social media, further confirming that "Independence Day: Resurgence" is indeed a go with a capital G.

"Director Roland Emmerich, who also helmed the original film, and producer Dean Devlin revealed the new title from a Q&A with VSauce3 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where filming is taking place," Mashable said. "They also introduced the cast - a line-up of veterans and new additions including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Liam Hemsworth, and Vivica A. Fox."

Goldblum will once again play David Levinson, the MIT alumni working for an NYC cable company who discovered the alien's plan to attack Earth. The actor had promised that part two will show more bombastic scenes and a story audiences can bite their teeth into.

"Besides all the spectacle, which will be more than you have ever seen, it is Roland's humanistic sweetness that has been reignited in a story about people," he was quoted by BT as saying.

In the sequel, Levinson is now "in charge of an operation known as Earth Space Defence."

Unfortunately, one of the original movie's leads, Will Smith, won't be back in the upcoming iteration. However, he's the only "big name star" absent in the sequel, MailOnline noted.

According to Emmerich, Smith was put off making another science fiction movie after "After Earth," a film he co-starred with his own son Jaden, was subjected to much criticism.

"In the very beginning I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out," the director explained. "I was at first very disappointed but friends told me this could be a great chance to try something new and it took me three years to figure it out."

Further, the movie's plot description was also released by 20th Century Fox, giving fans clues on what to expect from the sequel:

"We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."
